Fernridge Lake, Oregon -- June 1 - Oct, 2023
June 1 - Oct, 2023
We're back at Fern Ridge Lake for another great sailing season. The lake is full to the brim once again this year and the Anne Marie is back in her slip at Richardson Marina, After returning from our spring trip to Utah, we got things at home prepared for summer, and got back to Veneta and logged our first sailing day of the 2022 season on June 7. Some good winds were available this first week. With the lake levels at 373+ we anticipate a full season of sailing until October..
Fernridge Lake, Oregon -- May 15 - Oct, 2022
May 15 - Oct, 2022
We're back at Fern Ridge Lake for another great sailing season. The lake is full to the brim this year and we got the Anne Marie launched today, May 15. After getting things at home prepared for summerl, we got back to Veneta and logged our first sailing day of the 2022 season on May 20. Some good winds were available this first week, but then we hit a little bit of doldrums with a high pressure system.. With the lake levels at 372+ we anticipate a full season of sailing until October..
Fernridge Lake, Oregon -- April 5 - Sept, 2021
April 5 - Sept, 2021
We're back at Fern Ridge Lake for another great sailing season. The lake is still a little low but we got the Anne Marie launched today, April 5. After getting things at home under control, we got back to Veneta and logged our first sailing day of the 2021 season on April 19. Some good winds were available this first week, but then the last week of Aprll we got back into a rainy period and we're hoping this will help fll up the lake... it's still only at 369.23 elevation and needs another 5 feet to be at full pool. Plenty of water for sailing now, but the season may not last thru September if we don't accumulate significantly more rain.
Fernridge Lake, Oregon -- May 1 - Aug 24, 2020
May 8 - Aug 24, 2020
We're ready for another excellent summer sailing season at Fern Ridge Lake with our first sailing day of the 2020 season today and hoping to exceed last summer's record of 25 days on the water for the season. We launched the boat on Tuesday and got in our first day of sailing today. // Oregon had sub-normal rainfall so the lake never reached normal levels and consequently, we had to pull the boat out for the season on August 24. Better luck next year! We did exceed last summer's record of 25 sailing days... this year we got in 31.
Fernridge Lake, Oregon -- June 6 - Oct 1, 2019
Oct 1, 2019
We concluded an excellent summer sailing season at Fern Ridge Lake with a final day of sailing on 9/22 and 25 days on the water for the season. We pulled the boat out on Oct as the Army Corps of Engineers began their annual ritual of draining the lake for winter flood control. We expect to put her back in the water in the spring.
June 6, 2019
We are back at Fern Ridge Lake, Oregon, one of our very favorite sailing lakes in the US. This is our fourth time putting the Anne Marie in here. It is hard to beat... great marina which was all rebuilt last year, single slips (not shared) and very reasonable slip fees, marvelous park adjacent for relaxing in the shade with nice grass by the water for the dogs. Excellent winds all summer long and mostly sailboats on the water. Clean warm water, good swimming, launch and rigging areas, etc etc.
Covered Storage - Vancouver, WA
2018-19
We've placed the Anne Marie in covered storage near home until further notice. Due to health issues we missed the 2018 summer sailing season. Next planned sailing sojourn will be the summer of 2019 at Fern Ridge Lake, near Eugene, Oregon.
Columbia River - Vancouver, WA
May 2017
We launched the Anne Marie back in the Columbia for the summer and are looking forward to another summer of sailing close to home in the Columbia River.
Portland Oregon - back home spring of 2017
April 2, 2017
A fellow who has towed the boat before picked up our sailboat in St Louis and brought it back to Portland. Good to have our girl back home.
St Louis, Missouri -- October 2016 STORAGE
Oct 19, 2016
We have concluded the summer sailing season and have towed the Anne Marie to St Louis where we will place the boat into covered storage for the winter season. In the spring we will decide where we go from there.
The Thousand Islands, NY -- Sept 1-28m 2016
Sept 25, 2016
Well we returned to The Thousand Islands in upstate NY along the St Lawrence Seaway once again for the month of September. After thoroughly enjoying our time here last summer we wanted to see whether a repeat visit still seemed as absolutely marvelous as it did last year. Of course it is September this year rather than July & August like 2015, so the sailing weather was not quite as reliable as last year in summer. But we did manage to get out 6 times in 22 days of having the sailboat in our slip, and the sailing was generally excellent once again, often 12-15 mph. We had more northerly days which enabled us to sail eastward toward Alexandria Bay a couple times for some variety. But we also sailed west and on one particular day managed to reach all the way to Cedar Point State Park. Overall the quality of the sailing, the scenery, the friendships we made here, and the variety of things to do, as well as the reasonable cost of living here, make the Thousand Islands our number one rated sailing spot of anywhere we have ever been. We hope to return again.
Georgian Bay, Ontario -- July 29 - Aug 25, 2016
Aug 24, 2016
We have concluded our month at Georgian Bay. It has been grand! Out of 22 days in the water we sailed 8 days, most with excellent NW winds. Some days were rained out and some days were just too windy. We also had a few calm days when we managed to take our C-Dory to some distant bays and explore other parts of Georgian Bay. The Bayport Yachting Center on Midland Bay was an excellent marina, though a bit more expensive than we normally have to pay. Next door the other option was Wye Heritage Marina, but it was the same price. We met some friendly sailors belonging to the Midland Bay Sailing Club and attended a couple dinners there. All in all and excellent sailing sojourn. Now we're off to the Thousand islands for the month of September.
August 7, 2016
We launched the Anne Marie last week on Georgian Bay, ON and put up at the Bayport Yachting Center on Midland Bay. Expensive marina but first class all the way. This is a world class freshwater sailing destination. We typically see 20+ boats out sailing on a weekend afternoon as we did today. Because of the open stretches of water on the bay the sea state can get pretty rough when the winds pick up... ideal for a larger heavier sailboat but at times a bit much for our little 22. Still, it is a thrill to be sailing here... Gorgeous place. We'll be here a month and with plenty of wind we'll probably get out sailing 10-12 times. Today was day 3.
Lake Simcoe, Ontario -- June 13 - July 13, 2016
July 11, 2016
Our last day of sailing Lake Simcoe in the Anne Marie was yesterday... making it ten days of sailing in three weeks after launch. Today we pulled the boat and got her ready for towing to Georgian Bay. I'll have a week or so to do some maintenance while Libby flies home to check on things. We leave July 25 after Libby returns from her trip. Trailer brakes locked up, so I disconnected the hydraulic line for now and will get it serviced before we head north.
July 1, 2016
We arrived on June 13, but after a series of mishaps finally launched the Anne Marie on June 20 and sailed our first day June 21, appropriately the first day of summer. Lake Simcoe is known as an excellent sailing lake and it has not disappointed. We sailed the 21st and 22nd and then endured a 3 day lull. But the wind returned in strength on the 26th and we sailed 26th thru the 29th. Winds were a bit strong and stormy on the 30th and today, July 1, so we took a break. Mostly we are sailing on Cook's Bay, a 7-mile deep bay on the south end of Lake Simcoe. Simcoe is a monster lake covering almost 300 square miles, but our range only takes us out of the bay to Snake Island, maybe to Fox Island and back down to Gilford where our little Cook's Bay Marina is located.
Lake Murray, South Carolina -- April 12 - May 11, 2016
May 9, 2016
We sailed our final session today, with a marginal 8-10 at times late afternoon, making it 5 pretty decent days and 2 poor days... a total of 7 days sailing in the 3 weeks we spent here sailing Lake Murray. Less than stellar average... but it is a gorgeous and intriguing place to sail. We did find a Lake Murray web cam to take a peak at conditions, for what little you can see.
Apr 16, 2016
We arrived in Lexington SC on April 12. After setting up camp, we rigged and launched the Anne Marie on April 15 and got in our first afternoon of sailing on Saturday, April 16. It was a beautiful sunny day. Winds were predicted in the mid teens but turned out to be variable... sometimes 12-14 and other times 4-6, Rather up and down after what we became accustomed to at Lake Monroe; we'll have to see how consistent winds are. But the lake itself, is absolutely spectacular with its endless miles of varied shoreline and beautiful scenery.
Lake Monroe, Sanford Florida -- Nov 1, 2015 - April 8, 2016
April 6, 2016
March did not disappoint and, like when we here in 2015, provided many excellent sailing days. El Nino turned the weather upside down for a week or so and we slipped into summer patterns... hot and humid with T-storms almost every afternoon but in late March it turned back around and the weather cooled back down and we had many days of steady, predictable winds right up thru today. We sailed a total of 37 days this season. It would have been a lot more, but we were gone part of the time... and January and February were mostly a write-off to El Nino.
Mar 1, 2016
Well February was certainly a better month than January for sailing. El Nino has kept the weather cooler than normal much of the time and the winds have been on and off all month, but we still managed to get in 8 days of sailing during the month of February. Not quite the 3 days per week average we try for, but more, certainly, than we would have gotten at home in the Pacific Northwest this time of year. March should be better. It will be our last month in Florida for this winter before we begin moving north.
Feb 3, 2016
After a month of rainy or cold no wind days and 10 days out of the water for mast step repair, we relaunched Anne Marie on Jan 31 at Lake Monroe and sailed on Feb 2 and 3 in excellent 12-16 winds. We'll be here a couple more months so we hope to get in plenty more winter sailing before we head north again.
Jan 01, 2016
Very pleased to be out sailing on the first day of the new year, a harbinger of lots of good sailing in the year ahead. I sailed with my brother Frank on Lake Monroe today with relatively light winds... 6-9. Enough at times under full sail since we were still sailing at speeds 5-6mph. Plenty of wind in the forecasts ahead.
Dec 19, 2015
We wrapped up a great fall sailing season here on Lake Monroe this week. Libby and I sailed 7 days out of 17 this month, a 41% average. And today I had the distinct pleasure of sailing today with my former college roommate, Bob Carns, who first introduced me to sailing, back in the 60's on the Chesapeake. And we had an excellent day once again. Sailing days this year were:
November 2,5,6,14,15,16 and December 6,7,8,11,12,14,17,19
Nov 14, 2015
Today was our fifth day of sailing here, once again steady winds in the 10-15 range all afternoon... mostly 12-14. We hit speeds above 7.5 mph off the wind. Each of the five days we were out has been similar... today was a little higher winds and on the 8th we were dodging rain showers and winds were a little lighter. The last 4 days have been windless so we welcomed the return of stiff winds today and the forecasts promise much of the same for the next ten days.
Nov 1, 2015
We got the Anne Marie back from Catalina Yachts. We dropped it off to them a couple weeks ago and they did some fiberglass work for us. We launched the boat today back at Monroe Harbor Marina on Lake Monroe in Sanford, Florida. It was a hot day but we got started early and managed to rig her in the shade of the big warehouse building. We're back in our same slip from the spring... #22. We came back about 3:30 hoping to get out on the lake for a late afternoon sail, but the wind had faded down in the heat.
The Thousand Islands on the St Lawrence Seaway -- July 8 -Aug 20, 2015
August 17, 2015
Today marks our final day of sailing in the Thousand Islands this year, finishing on a memorable note with clear sunny weather and winds in the 15-20 range. Simply put, it has been incredible. We have sailed a total of 17 days on the St Lawrence... on the New York side both to the west and to the east... and on the Canadian side on the north side of Wolfe Island. The variety of sailing venues, the winds, the scenery, the weather... it has just been magnificent. We're already making our plans to return next year for the full season.
July 27, 2015
Today marked our 10th day of sailing here, a full 50% of the days since launching the boat on the 8th. We could have sailed more... but have taken several days off. This is the most consistently windy place we have been with the Anne Marie. Couldn't ask for better. Today was also memorable because we crossed through the Wolfe Island Cut and up into Canadian Waters. We followed the simple reporting requirements and sailed several tacks back and forth in the open waters between Wolfe Island and Howe Island just off the Canadian mainland. Winds were a steady 12-15 on the Canadian side, a little stronger than on the US side.
July 8, 2015
We finally made it to the Thousand Islands. It has been a dream of mine for the past several years and after arriving last week, today we rigged and launched the Anne Marie in the St Lawrence Seaway. I watched the wind reports all last summer and I know this is perhaps the most consistently windy place we have ever sailed. And it is beautiful beyond description. Our marina is Bayside Marina in Clayton, a well run, well protected marina at a reasonable cost offering easy access out into the river in relatively open waters and a fairly straight shot through the channel over into Canadian waters. The river is close to 5 miles wide here between the US and Canadian side and the winds are consistently from the west most of the time. Most afternoons, winds range from 8-10 on a light day and can easily be twice that and more. Careful study of the charts is advisable, and I would not venture into these waters without a GPS chartplotter. We will slowly and carefully expand our sailing area as we gain confidence in this new area.
Lake George, New York -- June 6-30, 2015
June 26, 2015
Today was our final day of sailing Lake George this summer. While the wind did not always cooperate this month and we got a lot more afternoon t-storms than is normal for this time of year, the weather today was ideal... clear, sunny, highs around 80, and a good stiff, steady breeze 10-14 out of the north all afternoon.
June 17, 2015
Winds have been more off than on since we arrived. Today we got a good sail in early making the 4th day we have sailed in the 11 days we have had the boat in the water. Winds were NE at 12-15 around noon and then tapered off gradually in the afternoon... and were dead by 3:30 in the afternoon. Prospects are better for tomorrow and Friday.
June 7, 2015
It's been almost two months since we had the Anne Marie in the water in Florida. We had planned to sail the Potomac out of Colonial Beach VA...a good sailing locale but much more brackish than anticipated so we skipped it. We arrived at Lake George in upstate New York on June 3. We got the boat rigged and launched yesterday... put her in at Rogers Rock State Park on the eastern shore.... There's a $10 launch fee here, but we bought a season's pass for $65 which gains us unlimited visits to all NY state parks while we're in the state all summer... a pretty fair deal. It's a decent launch with nice docks but too short and the concrete ends abruptly so care is required. Lake George offers wonderful sailing though... and our first two days here, we had excellent wind... quiet and serene with pristine natural surroundings. Should be an excellent month.
Lake Monroe, Sanford Florida -- March 17 - April 15, 2015
April 14, 2015
Well We have concluded our Florida trip. We hauled the boat out of the water today and derigged her for travel. From 3/19 to 4/6 we sailed 10 days. We drove to Venice for five days in April to visit with family and the wind reports showed good sailing wind every day we were gone. But upon our return the weather patterns had shifted and we're now in the pattern of weak winds except for squalls in the daily afternoon thunderstorms. Typical spring and summer weather here, I guess, so we are heading north tomorrow.
April 1, 2015
Sailing has been superb on Lake Monroe. We have had the boat in the water 13 days and sailed 6 with consistent winds and totally uncrowded conditions. The marina here, Monroe Harbour Marina, is the nicest one we have ever stayed at and the price is very reasonable. Forecast was excellent once again today, and Lake Monroe did not disappoint... another awesome day 12-15, which makes it 7 out of 14 that we have sailed... can't ask for much better than that
March 22, 2015
We've had the boat rigged for sailing and in the water at the Monroe Harbor Marina here at Lake Monroe in central Florida for 4 days now, and have sailed three... all very steady ideal conditions of about 10-12, occasionally strengthening to 12-14. Can't ask for more pleasant smooth water sailing, 1/2 hour reaches and almost no other boats. Although people say there may be alligators in the Lake we have yet to see one... but the nice part of that is that it keeps the jetskiers out!
Cross Country - January 8, 2015
The Anne Marie is towed across country to Florida by Scott Thompson owner of DrivePro services and delivered to Catalina Yachts in Tampa for some minor work. We will pick her up in March and take her to Lake Monroe in central Florida, our first sailing destination of 2015.
Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho - Aug 29 - Sept 12, 2014
Sept 10
After 11 days with the boat in the water we were able to sail 5 days. We had one rainy day followed by a stretch of high pressure with warm days and no winds. On Sept 8 the winds shifted back to SW and we got out for one last sail on Lake Coeur d'Alene, a bit gusty, as it often is, but well worth the effort. Today we pulled the boat and derigged her for travel back to Vancouver and storage... and then for her trip to Florida in December.
August 29
Back at one of our favorite places... Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho. Today was our first day back out sailing on the lake this year... and our final stop for the 2014 sailing season (the sailboat will be transported to Florida for us the end of this year). The weather was particularly encouraging for wind over the next week, so we decided to modify our plans for the return trip home from Flathead and spend a couple weeks back at Lake Coeur d'Alene. And today did not disappoint. Though never as steady as Flathead, Lake Coeur d'Alene is a very scenic and intriguing place to sail and with all its mountains, coves and points, it keeps even an seasoned sailor on his toes with frequent gusts and lulls. Out in the main channel of the north bay between Arrow Point and the east shore is generally the steadiest.

July 27
We sailed on the 25th with strong west winds... a bit gusty since the west winds come over the land mass and out onto the bay. But once away from shore it settles down a bit. Then today the patterns shifted and we're getting the traditional Easterly or ENE flow which we remember from 2012 and which offers the steadiest winds and sailing on Big Arm Bay. Had an absolutely flawless sailing afternoon of 10-12 rock steady winds with clear blue skies and temps close to 80. It doesn't get any better than this.. every sailor's dream!
July 22
Had a north wind today on the lake and it was very windy in the bay at Polson which is unusual. We decided to check out Big Arm Bay and the North wind kind of makes it into the bay around the islands but not like a NE or easterly. Still it was nice steady 8-12 over the course of the afternoon. About 5:30 we looked up and saw big thunderheads rolling in so we immediately dropped sail and motored back to the marina. We made it in just ahead the rain So all in all a nice afternoon of sailing. Three times out this trip so far and three different wind directions but all were enjoyable.
July 21
Some bad forest fires in Western Washington ignited by lightning caused very smoky skies for a few days. Then they cleared out with high winds which left the mountains clear but the water too rough to take the boat out. Today the winds backed of to normal summer winds, except the direction was not what we had been accustomed to in 2012 when prevailing winds seemed to be NE like what we had on the 15th. The winds were mostly westerly today, so directly offshore at Sunny Shores Marina in Big Arm. So we cruised out on a flat downwind run and once a couple miles offshore the winds where pretty nice and filled in across the bay... Good sailing with afternoon winds peaking around 15 or so and then mellowing out to 10-12 as we sailed back and forth across the bay.
July 15
Flathead Lake on a nice clear day late afternoon with steady breezes about 8 mph. T-storms were predicted earlier in the day but when that prediction was canceled we headed over to Sunny Shores Marina at Big Arm Bay where we will once again have our boat moored for the time we are here. We missed the best wind which was just tapering down when we got out on the lake about 5 pm but it was still quite enjoyable sailing especially up off Lentz Point which is typically the windiest part of the bay.
Fern Ridge Lake, OR -- May 19 - June 1, 2014
May 24
This was our fourth day in the water here and we have had excellent sailing 3 out of 4 days. Steady afternoon winds starting to come up between 2 and 3 pm and solid 10-12 or higher until early evening. We have seen as many as 40 boats out in the late afternoon. Fern Ridge is a true sailors' lake with lots of sailboats out enjoying the wind and very few power boats or jetskis. One of our all time favorites!
Columbia River, Vancouver WA -- August 18 - November 30, 2013
November 11
Autumn is not a great sailing season in any places I have been. The Columbia is no different. Lots of light breeze days... which is ok as we have been busy moving into the new house... we have sneaked out on average about once a week, mostly on non stellar sub 10mph days. The exception in the fall are east wind days. We had one today and so Libby and I got out for a couple hours. Winds gusting to 20 in the mid afternoon, so we sailed on just the mainsail and just off the marina. We didn't venture too far. Daylight Savings has ended so it is already getting dark around 5. But at least we got out there. Temps in the upper 50's so doable in a parka. The nice part about our new Vancouver living situation is we are less than ten minutes on surface streets to the boat so it is pretty easy just to go down and sail for an hour or two in the afternoon at the warmest part of the day.
August 18
Back in the Columbia. After our travels this year we returned to the Portland metro area in July to field an offer to buy our house which we put up for sale this spring. The house sold and we have bought another in Vancouver WA on the other side of the Columbia, and will be maintaining a slip at Steamboat Landing Marina , After we finished with the move, we launched the Anne Marie last week and went out for a pleasant afternoon of sailing on Sunday with friends in 10-12 mph winds. We should get in plenty of sailing over the next few months as we await our new home to be ready to move into.
Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho -- June 2 - July 14, 2013
June 13
Had a great sailing day on June 11 with winds in the 12-18 range. The 12th was light and a storm moved in today and we had quite a bit of rain, so the Anne Marie stayed in her slip. We're anticipating good winds tomorrow and are taking another RV couple out with us.
June 9
Marvelous sailing this weekend. Took a fellow RVer out for a sail on Saturday... winds were 12-15 and we had a great sail. Today, Sunday, Libby and I went out after some trepidation on her part, in 15-18 out of the South. We sailed mainsail only for several hours, and then dropped the main, unfurled the jib and sailed back straight down wind to the marina on the jib only, often hitting speeds well in excess of 6 mph.
June 6
We got the boat launched on Tuesday afternoon and motored over to our usual slip at Skip and Susan's marina next to the RV Park. We sailed Wednesday and Thursday afternoons in very nice winds, reaching probably 12-14 at times. Today we sailed almost all the way across the north bay of the lake to Arrowpoint Resort, a 3.5 mile reach. We played in the warm breezes blowing up from the south end of the lake through the narrows off Arrowpoint.

Clear Lake, California -- April 12 - April 30, 2013, 2013
April 28
We sailed each of our final three days at Clear lake, capping an excellent month of sailing when we sailed 13 of 17 days in the water. Saturday was perfect. Sailing from 5 until 8pm with perfect 10-15 mph breezes. It was the west thermal again so sailing close to the windward shore meant flat water and lots of fun reaches. Today, Sunday, the wind came up a little later and was a little lighter, but we still sailed 5:30 to 7:30 with very pleasant 8-10 mph breezes, occasionally higher.
April 25
We went out sailing about 5:00 pm for 2 1/2 hours in the best session of the trip thus far... a very consistent 10-15 mph for the first hour and a half had us ripping back and forth across the flat bay between our marina and Lakeport. We achieved speeds of 7.5 mph according to our GPS, the fastest close reach I have ever clocked on the Anne Marie. I have had her up to hull speed of 8 mph downwind, but on a close reach this was a record! As it drew near sunset winds fell back to 8-10 and we had a very enjoyable last hour, getting into the marina about 7:30. There were two other sailboats out.
April 24
Winds came up early today as predicted. Blowing out of the NE around 1:00. We headed out about 1:30. Winds shifted around to the East and quite steady in the 10-12 range with occasional higher periods. By 3:00 it was moving around to the SE and finally we headed in on S winds of about 8 at 4:30... getting back to the marina around 5:00
April 23
Classic late afternoon westerly thermals once again... good sailing from 5:30 - 7:30... got in by twilight around 8
April 21
Classic late afternoon thermal effect as the east facing mountain slopes, now in shadow, send the cooler air dropping down the slopes and across the lake toward the warm west facing hills on the east shore. We headed out around 6:00 with 8-9 mph breezes. It built to a rousing 10-15 by 7:00, getting close to hull speed in the Catalina under full sail on smooth water... and then as the sun began to set it dropped off to a nice steady 8-10 and we sailed til after sunset, the only boat in view on the lake. We made it back to the marina inlet about 7:45... plenty of time to drop sails, fire up the outboard and motor into the slip and tie up for the night.
April 19
The day started out quietly with barely a breath of wind but by 2:00 the wind was up. No weather system at all - the skies were clear - so it must have been pressure differentials causing the wind. It was a very WINDY afternoon . By 3:00 we were getting a steady 15 mph with higher gusts and we sailed over close to the windward shore by Lakeport where the chop was a bit less. By 4:00 it was 15 gusting to 20. We were sailing on the mainsail with only a hint of jib to facilitate the tacks. But it is a bit early in the season to be pushing our boat to its limits, so around 4:00 we dropped the main, turned tail and sailed in on the jib at about 50%, hitting speeds above 7 mph even so! We got in close to 5 and the wind was still building. An exciting afternoon! We were glad we left Corey at home.
April 17
The winds were ideal for sailing this afternoon. We headed out of the Konocti Vista Marina around 3:00 with SE winds around 8. The winds were up by 1:00 over in Lakeport, actually. By the time we cleared the point and were in the clear, we had a steady 10-12 for a couple hours and sailed almost all the way across to Lucerne on the east shore of Clear Lake, some 8 miles across. Other than a bass boat or two flying by, we had the lake to ourselves and maintained steady speeds of around 6 mph or so all the way across. By about 5, however, it started to drop off and we only made it back about half way under sail before we had to fire up the Yamaha outboard and motorsail the rest of the way back.
April 15
Well the winds were so strong on Saturday that we stayed off the water. And Sunday proved to be very windy as well. We went out for about an hour and decided to hang it up as the lake was very rough and gusts were in excess of 20 mph. These conditions accompanied a cold front and even stronger winds with gusts to 30 are forecast for Monday and then it should start to taper off as the weather warms back up.
April 13
Our first day out on the lake in the late afternoon after rigging in pleasant 10-12 mph winds was very enjoyable. It seems like spring is the time to be here for sailing. We have been skunked here in the fall, but the forecast is for plenty of wind over the next few weeks, so it should be a great place to sail. The scenery, uncrowded conditions and sheer magnitude of the lake, along with totally free marina slips at Konocti Vista in Lakeport make this a great place for spring sailing.

Columbia River, Portland OR -- Aug 14 - Nov 2, 2012
November 19
Today the Anne Marie arrived in Williams CA where it will await our arrival in the spring to take her over to Clear Lake for sailing in the month of April. I found a professional driver who towed it down to the Sacramento area for me and delivered it to the pre-arranged storage yard for $350... a very reasonable fee for the 500 miles tow, since 1000 miles down and back would cost me that much in fuel alone if I tried to do it myself. We are headed with our Country Coach for Arizona and Nevada for January/February and Southern California in March and were not planning to do any sailing in those places, so this was the ideal arrangement for us.
November 2
Today we pulled the boat out of the water, derigged the mast and sails and prepared her for towing again. The sailing season here in Oregon is over... rainy chilly weather has arrived and winter is on the way. We let our boat slip at Tomahawk Bay Marina lapse and I pulled her out of the water over at the 42nd Street boat ramp on Marine Drive. I will do a little maintenance and then have her towed down to Northern California to a storage yard there where we will pick her up in the spring and do some sailing on Clear Lake when we are down there in the motorhome, to start the 2013 sailing season.

September 25
This is my first entry in 6 weeks, but we have been averaging a couple days a week since we got back. A few days were pretty light, but quite often we have had excellent winds out of Hayden Island. Today was no exception. The local weather babe was calling for 'breezy' conditions this afternoon, so we took a shot even though the wind was pretty light in the early afternoon. Went out about 3:15 and sailed downwind toward the I-205 bridge until about 4:00 when winds picked up... After 5 they picked up even more and we were fully powered, hitting speeds of 8.0 when sailing with the current. Probably 1.5mph current so we were doing an honest 6.5, I expect. An excellent day, all in all.
August 14
My son Patrick and I rigged the Anne Marie and launched her back into the Columbia up off Marine Drive and sailed her for the afternoon in decent 10-12 mph winds. Given the current in the river and relative narrowness it is less than ideal, but it is about the only sailing option when we are back at home in Lake Oswego. We keep her moored at Tomahawk Bay Marina on Hayden Island, a very nice marina at a very reasonable cost. Since we have to store her somewhere temporarily she may as well sit in the water and we can get a little sailing in this fall before the fall rains set in and we put her away until next year. Sailing the Columbia is definitely better than not sailing at all.

Okanagan Lake, B.C., Canada -- Aug 4-11, 2012
August 8
We arrived to record heat in Kelowna, an unwelcome event. It hit 100 here the first day we were were here, Sunday. It was hotter here than at our home in Texas! Go figure! Monday it cooled back down to a high of around 90, still hot but tolerable. We launched the sailboat on Monday morning and sailed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, today. Tuesday was the best day with steady winds around 10-12 from the NE, which is the best direction when sailing out of the harbor where Hotel Eldorado is located because the bridge just to the north flattens the rollers from the lake and it is relatively smooth sailing. Today winds were from the SW and it was very choppy indeed as the waves have many miles in which to build up. It was also much gustier and not an altogether pleasant experience. We'll sail one more day before we leave either tomorrow or Friday.
The marina at Hotel Eldorado is remarkably the only marina we could find on Okanagan which accepts short term slip rentals... not a very friendly place for those traveling with their boats. And the Eldorado is a TERRIBLE marina... possibly the worst I have ever stayed at. There is nothing to break the chop of the main lake so when windy the boats bounce around terribly. And the "slip" if you call it that, it just a spot between two big wood posts with the wood dock at the front... so you have to pull in very carefully and try to secure yourself to these posts and not ram the dock... and then you have to climb off and on over the bow rail. Awful. And to add insult to injury they charge $50/day plus tax. Gimme a break. $280 for 5 days and they don't even have a log boom to break the chop. Ridiculous. It was worth the trip and the money to visit with our friends Haim and Vika and their kids and get them out on the lake sailing one day. But I would NEVER bring our boat to this lake again. Okanagan is off my list. Two thumbs down.

Flathead Lake, Montana -- July 5-Aug 3, 2012
July 31
We took a few days off and visited Glacier National Park over the weekend. Given some questionable weather the end of last week we hadn't sailed in several days. So we took the boat out Monday and Tuesday, today. Excellent sailing both days... clear weather, blue skies, perfect steady wind and flat water. Superlatives fail. We sailed about 3 hours each day... and I have to say that sailing just doesn't get any better than this. The entire bay was filled in today so we sailed all the way across and then back, up through the straights between the islands out almost to the main lake then back in around Melita Island and took a downwind run back to the marina. We got out about 2pm each day and about 5-6:00 pm it generally seems to back off. But today it backed off some around 4:30 but we had enough to get 3-4 mph wing and wing back to the marina. Yet as we arrived at the marina it kicked back in and was almost as strong as when we arrived. Could have sailed a couple more hours, I guess, but we needed to get back in. That first hour, inside the islands, I could have had it on autopilot... the wind was so steady our speed never changed from 6.3 - 6.5 mph as indicated on the GPS and the boat was on a blissful heel of about 20 degrees. How perfect is that?

July 21
Since our "lesson" detailed below, we have enjoyed many idyllic days on Flathead Lake. We have avoided a few substantial t-storm days, but have had lots of great afternoons on this spectacular lake. Today was no exception... crystal clear skies with some high puffy white clouds for relief. Steady 10-12 mph winds all afternoon... sailing full 150 jennie closehauled and beam reaches across Big Arm Bay. Probably a dozen sailboats out within view, though visibility is so great here, some of these were probably 8 miles away. We cruised back and forth, out to Wildhorse, over to Melita and back... never even having to tend the main, so steady were the winds. The scenery is sublime with many inspiring views to enjoy depending on where you are on the lake. On a scale of 1-10, Flathead is definitely a 10! See our photo gallery for many other fine photos.

July 9
We headed out of the marina about 12:30 and motored out to the wind line where there was a decent breeze on the water. Skies were mostly clear with a few puffy clouds. We sailed a couple hours and were hitting speeds close to 6 mph on a pretty good heel... so it was a nice sailing afternoon. This is just a gorgeous lake to sail on... probably the best place I have ever sailed. A wide bay, steady prevailing winds from the NE. We look forward to exploring some of the islands off shore like Wild Horse Island and the smaller Cromwell Island, about 5 miles across the bay from our marina. About 2:30 we noticed a dark cloud over one of the mountains behind the marina which was moving our way. And as the cloud obscured the sun, the wind faded off so we turned toward the marina and thought we would sail as far as we could, then drop sail and motor in. But about half way, the wind began to shift around to the East. Then it whipped up suddenly real strong, and we started scrambling to furl the jib... then suddenly the squall swung 180 degrees around to the E and it got very dicey for a few minutes. We managed to just release the main and the jib, which were flapping wildly in the strong squall and then used the furling line to reel in the jib quickly. Once the jib was in it still took a bit of scrambling in the squally conditions to drop the main but once that was done, it was quick task to tie it up, start the motor and head back to the marina. Whew! This was unlike any conditions I have ever experienced with those violent shifts in wind direction. Almost tornadic! Important lesson learned... take thunderstorm clouds moving toward you very seriously on midwestern lakes!

July 7
We cruised over to Flathead Lake, Montana in the motor coach arriving Thurs July 5. We did a little RV park shuffling the first couple days and then settled down in Polson at the foot of the great lake. We found a terrific little marina called Sunny Shores about 12 miles up the Hwy 93 along the west shore of the Lake. It is right across Big Arm Bay from the Big Arm State Park where they have an excellent boat launch. The little bay is just south of Wild Horse Island and the Dayton marina which is reputedly the best sailing spot on the lake. Moorage is just $300 for the month, half the price of Dayton Marina and 40% of the price up at Lakeview Marina further north which we also checked out. If you are a sailor, you can forget Lakeview Marina. Sunny Shores, on the other hand is a very quiet tucked away little marina with perhaps 30 slips... nice wood docks and nice grassy shady shoreline for hanging out between sailing sessions. We have already met a couple other sailors among the half dozen other sailboats at the marina, and they welcomed us heartily. We launched today across the bay and I motored across to Sunny Shores Marina (pictured at right) while Libby drove the car and trailer around to meet me. As soon as the high pressure moves out, we look forward to some excellent sailing.

Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho -- June 1-July 5, 2012
July 3
Last night we had huge thunderstorms with lightning and pouring rain. It kept the dogs up a good part of the night... and us with them. Today we had more t-storms and even some hail... in July! Then as predicted it finally broke around 4 and by 5 it was definitely clearing. So we took the Anne Marie our for a final sail on Lake CDA... We had excellent winds and achieved speeds of 7.5 mph on a heart pounding heel. And then about 7:30 pm we took her over to the boat launch directly across from Blackwell Island where we're staying and pulled her out. We brought her back to our campsite... to the empty parking area across from our spot and in the morning, July 4th, we'll unstep the mast and get her road ready. We'll break camp tomorrow as well and be ready to pull out for Flathead Lake MT first thing Thursday morning.
June 29
It has not been a banner month for sailing Lake CDA, unfortunately. Although we have certainly had some nice afternoons out there, we have seen an unusual amount of rain... and then after days of rain, it clears and instead of clearing winds we have frequently had high pressure move in and dead calm. As we approach the last day of the month we have probably sailed 6-8 days total, so not skunked but nothing to brag about either. We have not once had to partially reef the jib, but rather we've sailed with a full 150 genoa every time. No complaints, but it shows how the winds have been on the light side all month. We had a nice day this past Weds, the 27th, and took new friends Bill and Ginny Evans out for a sail. We stopped at the docks downtown and walked across to Hudson's for one of their famous hamburgers. Today was one of the best days we have had... but still never needed to reef the jennie. Still we had fairly consistent winds from the SSW, cruising at up to 6.5 mph and tacked our way through the throat of the upper lake and over to Arrow Point. Very nice afternoon and beautiful weather in the mid 70's. We hope to sail a few more times before we pull the boat next Tuesday and get ready to head for Flathead Lake July 5.
June 15
June 11 was indeed a picture perfect day, but unfortunately very still. Not a day for sailors. We had another decent day on the 12th and did get out for some enjoyable sailing, finally. Winds were probably 10-12 and we had the Anne Marie up over 6 knots a couple times. It was kind of cloudy and cool though, but better days were in store. June 14 and 15 were beautiful... sunny and warm with a modest breeze on the lake. We were out both afternoons as the photo to the right will attest. That is looking south down beautiful Lake Coeur d'Alene past Arrow point on the left. The lake is 26 miles long. The north bay is a good 6 miles across and we do most of our sailing up there between our marina in the northwest corner, over past Coeur d'Alene Resort, Tubbs Hill, and Across towards Arrow Point or up in to the bay above it. Very nice sailing,

June 10
We finished out our Fern Ridge trip with good sailing almost every day the last week. Then we pulled the boat, derigged and and headed for Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Our first 9 days here in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho were pretty much rained out. We got some sun breaks, but it was cold and wet and stormy all over the Pacific Northwest, and so we waited until today to get the boat rigged and launched and over to her slip at Murphy's Marina, adjacent to Blackwell RV Resort. Tomorrow promises to be a picture perfect day and we will for sure be out there on the Anne Marie. I will get some photos out on the lake tomorrow.

Fern Ridge Lake, Oregon -- May 2-31, 2012
May 21
Well after good sailing winds almost every day since we got here, the weather changed today and we got rain most of the afternoon. Not atypical at all for this time of year in the Pacific NW. Same thing is forecast for tomorrow and potentially the next few days, so we're getting a a break from sailing and can get a few other things done on the coach. Should be nice by the weekend.
May 15
The last couple days had excellent winds. Yesterday the direction was out of the East rather than the usual prevailing NW. But once we got a few hundred yards offshore we had excellent winds which picked up to the high teens in the late afternoon. Most of the day was calm today and some light breezes came up around 5:00 pm but we're taking the day off... winds are supposed to be better tomorrow.
May 12
Yet another great sailing day on Fern Ridge Lake again today... an extraordinarily steady 10-12 all afternoon... never a single gust and no light spots either. Just rock steady with nice flat water and about 80° and clear blue skies. There were more than a dozen other sailboats out, and only saw 3 or 4 powerboats the whole time. Fern Ridge is great for that... a real sailor's lake. We also sailed yesterday, Friday in a bit stronger winds. We skipped Thursday the 10th, as it was really blowing hard 20+. and we needed a day off. We had already sailed two other days this week. All in all today was yet another excellent afternoon of sailing. We took Corey along... he really enjoys his sailing days, especially when it's not too rough out there.
May 8
Terrific sailing on Fern Ridge Lake again today... a little cooler... high just around 60 or so, blue skies with some puffy clouds, obscuring the sun at times. Went out around 2:30 after the weather warmed up a little.. had 15-20 out of the North east which is the prevailing direction here. Wind held til about 4 pm when it pulled back for a bit. Then it picked back up and blew 12-16 or so til we went in around 5. Only two other sailboats out. Had her on a 30 degree heel at times... kept the 150 jenny furled to about a 90 most of the day until the wind backed off around 4 and then opened up the full jenny. GPS had us clocked at 7.2 mph at times. All in all another excellent afternoon of sailing. The Anne Marie performed marvelously as usual.
May 6
Doesn't get much better than this... We sailed Fern Ridge Lake again today... outstanding day, high around 70, cloudless blue skies, perfect 14-18 steady winds ALL day. Maybe a dozen boats out. Had her on a 30 degree heel quite a bit... kept the 150 jenny furled to about a 110 most of the day except the last downwind run back to the marina. GPS had us clocked over 7.5 mph at times. This is just the greatest lake for sailing boats, I'll tell ya... we have heard any number of people say it is reputed to be one of the best sailing lakes in the country.... easy to see why. A delightful day was had by all!

May 5
After arriving at the RV resort on beautiful Fern Ridge Lake in northwest Oregon on May 2 to rainy weather, we spent the first few days getting settled anyhow and doing some shopping. By Saturday, today, the weather broke and the forecast on Sailflow.com was for good wind this afternoon. So after lunch, we stepped the mast, rigged the sails and the running gear and were soon out on the lake in nice solid 10 kt winds that were picking up nicely. The air temps only peaked around 60 today, so we dressed warmly and sailed until around 6:00 pm or so. The winds had picked up to 12-15 with some whitecaps, so we had an invigorating session, putting the Anne Marie through her paces smartly.
We're tickled with the new Garmin GPS 740s Chartplotter we just had installed. We got the US inland waters and lakes card with it and so we have a beautiful 7" touchscreen color chart of the lake, and all the data you want like speed, depth, course, bottom contours, etc. Ain't technology grand! The Anne Marie is very proud of her new toy! And we feel like it will be a worthwhile investment as we sail many new unfamiliar lakes over the coming years:
Coeur d'Alene Lake, ID; Flathead Lake, MT; Lake Okanagan, Kelowna B.C.; Canyon Lake, TX; Texoma Lake, OK; Lake Eufaula, OK; Beaver Lake, AR; Stockton Lake, MO; Lake Winnebago, WI; Lake of the Woods, MN; Tellico Lake TN, Chesapeake Bay, MD; Lake George, NY; St. Lawrence Seaway, CA... many wonderful places to explore with the aid of Garmin.

(October 17 - initial entry)
This is our first trip towing the Anne Marie, our Catalina 22 MkII sailboat behind the Gulfstream Motor Coach in search of fair winds and following seas :-) We arrived under a persistent high pressure system and so, sad to report, no winds. This was fine, we thought, because we needed to devote ourselves to setting up the new coach anyway. The weather forecast is promising winds to begin the second week as the high pressure system lifts and cooler weather moves in. I will add additional info after we get the boat rigged and into the water.
